Rainbows in Rosedale

Located in Kansas City, Kansas, United States

Mission Statement
VISION: Neighbors who are engaged with each other and the land in a thriving, diverse community

MISSION: To build a sustainable community in Rosedale by growing food, sharing resources and practicing hospitality and peacemaking

Community Description
We are a diverse group of 10+ neighbors living in multiple households in or near the Rosedale neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas. We differ in our genders, abilities, orientations, ethnicities and faith traditions. One of us lives in a tiny house and dreams of more tiny house neighbors. Some of us live in single-family style that are full; others have rooms available. Our neighborhood also has empty lots available for purchase as well as entire homes for rent or purchase.

Currently some of us share vehicles, labor, lawn mowers, a vegetable garden, a fruit orchard, hospitality, potlucks, CSA local food memberships and other resources as needed. We dream of sharing a cow, goats, chickens, rabbits and perhaps other homestead animal neighbors.

As a community, we encourage healthy, compassionate relationships with our selves, with one another, and with the world around us to sustain our spiritual, interpersonal and financial lives. We move toward these goals by practicing service, simple living, conflict resolution and nonviolent communication. We will seek to honor, understand, celebrate and inclusively respond to diversity. We nurture spirituality in ways that recognize the sacred in every person and cultivate a healthy balance between work, rest, education, reflection and recreation. We hope to keep the cost as low, fair and ethical as possible by avoiding for-profit loans and sharing some of our collective resources to realize what we need one project at a time. In all this, we aim to keep learning and to keep giving thanks.

We invite other neighbors to join us in creating a sacred space to explore sustainable community living.

As of July 2017, these are the steps we’ve defined for how to get involved:

1) An individual expresses interest in the group, either in person, over the phone or online via email, Facebook or IC.org.

2) A current member of the group sends our interest survey to the individual, and the individual completes it in order to help others understand who they are as well as why and how they are interested.

3) After reviewing the survey, someone from the communications team will reach out to the individual for a followup conversation.

4) If the conversation leads to desire for the individual to meet the whole group and consider joining, they will be invited to the next monthly potluck and meet the group.

5) After meeting the group, an individual may be added to the Facebook group, email listserv and/or phone tree. (Because group members sometimes share sensitive information – such as home addresses – newly interested individuals will not receive group communications until after they have met the group. In addition, if an individual has not recently attended meetings, they may be temporarily removed from communications until they resume an in-person presence in the group.)
