Taman Petanu Eco Neighborhood

Located in Sukawati, Bali, Indonesia

Mission Statement
The basis of Taman Petanu is a deep commitment to preserve and enhance Bali’s environmental, social, cultural and economic sustainability. It is being created to demonstrate a model for sustainable living and community empowerment that upholds the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which balances our harmony with man, nature, and God or Universal Energy.

Community Description
The Taman Petanu Eco Neighborhood is a beautiful 1.5 Hectare property just 15 minutes south of Ubud, Bali. The founders came together and began to form the community vision in 2009. As of December 2015, construction on the common facilities has finished and half of members’ homes are completed or under construction.

The neighborhood includes 18 self-contained private plots, which are supported by a range of common access facilities including: centralized waste and wastewater treatment, permaculture landscaping, pool, playground, barbecue & gathering area, amphitheater and pavilion for workshops and events. When purchasing a lot, members also purchase a share in the common facilities proportional to their lot size.

The Taman Petanu Eco Neighborhood’s Philosophy and Principles

“The closer we get to a virtuous circle, in which our work, our home life, our ethics and our spirituality are mutually reinforcing, the closer we will be to achieving genuine sustainability” James Wilsdon

The members of the Taman Petanu Eco Neighborhood are committed to the principles of sustainability. For us, sustainability is achieved through an integrated, holistic approach, which is outlined in the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana. Tri Hita Karana describes how we develop based on three direct relationships: our relationship with the environment, our relationship with other beings, and our relationship with God or Universal Energy.

Overview of principles of sustainable development

In designing and developing the Taman Petanu Eco Neighborhood’s plans the following internationally recognized principles for sustainable development are being used to the maximum degree possible:

Ecological Principles
Materials should be from renewable or non-depletable resources, recyclable and durable
Design should consider efficient energy use and the use of renewable and self-generated energy
Efficient water use and environmentally friendly and self-sufficient (gray and black) waste water disposal
The landscape design is based on principles of regeneration and sustainability

Biological Principles
Materials should be as much as possible of natural origin and durable
Materials need to be of low toxicity and not output any harmful chemicals
Environments should not promote, accumulate or circulate harmful vapors, bacteria, viruses and / or fungi
Building design should include natural ventilation and minimize or avoid use of air conditioning
Buildings should be adequately insulated against unwanted noise, and use natural lighting

Social and Community Principles
The design of the neighborhood will foster healthy family and community relationships
Housing is planned to be away from traffic routes and centers of activity
Community outreach activities that benefit the surrounding village and farmers
