The Eight Treasures Every LIFE Is Born With

To pursue wealth is a misstep; the true theme of human LIFE is elevation.

When a person descends into the mortal world, eight great treasures are already present—gifts bestowed by the Greatest Creator. LIFE is a journey, and these treasures are ample for a joyful passage. There is no need to chase material wealth along the way. To travel burdened with painfully earned possessions is wearying—and such a journey cannot go far.

As a LIFE borrowing a human body to travel the mortal world, the best destination is the Kingdom of Heaven. Suppose the distance from arrival on Earth to the Kingdom of Heaven is one hundred kilometers. If one ends at ninety, one does not arrive. Even at ninety-nine, to miss one is still to miss all. And if a lifetime covers only thirty or forty kilometers, the road ends not in heaven but likely in the domain of animals.

Let us consider the eight treasures every LIFE is born with:

1.  The Sun
The sun is our greatest treasure. Through it we receive light, warmth, and the energy the body needs.

2.  Air
From the first breath we draw on our own—how wondrous that is. President, billionaire, or shepherd: in the freedom to breathe, all are equal.

3.  Water
Water stands with the sun and air in importance. Without sun, air, and water, humans cannot live. One may live without money, without house or car or electricity or even clothing—but not without sun, air, and water. Water is essential yet inexpensive; rivers, lakes, seas, streams, and groundwater abound. In nature’s design, water is inexhaustible and vast—a treasure beyond measure.

4.  Earth and Soil
Who pauses to see that the earth and its soil are the Greatest Creator’s storehouse for LIFE? With soil, all things grow; myriad beings roam and play; and from the earth we receive abundant food. This is wealth.

5.  The Myriad Phenomena
Spring, summer, autumn, winter; wind, cloud, rain, snow. Mountains and rivers, deserts and steppes. Birds and beasts, grasses and flowers. Dawn and dusk, birdsong and flight—these are the riches along our journey. Without them, the road is barren and LIFE is dull.

6.  Eyes, Ears, Nose, Tongue, and Body
Eyes to see, ears to hear, a nose to smell, a tongue to taste; legs to walk, hands to hold—how wondrous. These, too, are treasures given at birth.

7.  Sensation, Feeling, Resonance, and Being Moved
We sense changes of temperature; feel another’s irritation, anger, and joy; taste the warmth and sweetness of love. We feel pain, soreness, itch and the chill or warmth of human dealings. We respond: “I lift my head and see the bright moon; I lower it and think of home.” We are stirred when “gibbons call from both banks, and the skiff has already passed ten thousand ranges,” and when “the cataract plunges as if the Milky Way fell from the Ninth Heaven.” True feeling moves people; sincerity moves them to tears. The capacity to sense, to feel, to resonate, and to be moved is treasure beyond price.

8.  Sexual Organs and Sexual Delight
Palaces and cars, office and rank, mountains of gold and silver—without sexual organs and the capacity for sexual delight, LIFE loses its flavor and joy. Even a rustic from the poorest village may know this joy as keenly as any president or billionaire. That utmost beauty and bliss bear no relation to power, status, or material wealth. It is among the Greatest Creator’s most precious gifts to humankind.

These eight treasures are innate to everyone. In terms of true wealth, each person is a true millionaire of wealth—this is the Greatest Creator’s love for human LIFE. Possessing and enjoying these treasures, we ought to be grateful, content, and cherishing. Why then exploit Mother Earth out of greed? Why sink into worry and sorrow? Why toil day and night to hoard more?

Since the Greatest Creator has given these eight treasures, the Greatest Creator surely knows what we need. Do we still need to fret over tomorrow?

Here lies the problem: we should not worry about tomorrow, yet greed and possessiveness create scarcity, and thus we worry. Take sexual organs as an example. If no one claimed them as private possession, sexual intimacy would remain abundant and ever-flowing. Once seized and treated as commodity, abundance turns into scarcity. So it is with other resources: when five percent of people hold eighty-five percent of Earth’s resources, and ninety-five percent share only fifteen percent, the many must labor under scarcity. Abundance—meant for all to enjoy, along with the joy of being human and the wonder of LIFE—is lost to greed and possessiveness, which produce shortage and suffering.

The best way is to walk the Way of the Greatest Creator—the Chanyuan Path. Beyond this, is there truly another road?
